National Sports Day Celebration at Janani Home

The courtyard of Janani Home was alive with cheers and laughter as the children celebrated National Sports Day, an event coordinated by India Volunteer Care (IVC). It was a day not only to play and enjoy but also to remember why sports hold a special place in our lives and in our country’s history.
National Sports Day is observed every year on August 29, marking the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who is celebrated as one of India’s greatest sports icons. The day serves as a reminder of his achievements and, more importantly, the role of sports in building a strong, healthy, and disciplined society. By celebrating this day, we aim to inspire children to embrace sports as a way of life and to understand that fitness, teamwork, and perseverance are just as valuable as classroom learning.
At Janani Home, the celebration began with the children taking a sports pledge, promising to participate with fairness, honesty, and respect for one another. This simple act set the tone for the entire day, emphasizing that the true spirit of sports lies in unity, discipline, and joy – not just in winning medals. The children then took part in a variety of activities that brought both fun and learning. Running races filled the ground with excitement and determination, while the traditional game of koko tested teamwork and agility. Chess gave space for focus and strategy, while a yoga session reminded everyone of the balance between body and mind. The badminton matches brought out lively competition, laughter, and cheers, making the day even more vibrant.
To add deeper meaning, IVC also organized an awareness session on sports and lifestyle. The children learned why staying active matters – from improving concentration in studies to maintaining long-term health and building self-confidence. They also discovered how sports teach values like discipline, resilience, and teamwork, which are vital in every aspect of life. The celebration ended with happy faces and a renewed energy among the children. For them, National Sports Day was not only about playing games but also about learning why sports are an essential part of life. For us at IVC, it was a privilege to coordinate this meaningful event with Janani Home and to see how sports can inspire joy, confidence, and togetherness.

Bringing Hope and Health to the Unreached

A Journey of Care Through Mobile Health Camps

In the quiet corners of our country beyond the reach of hospitals, pharmacies, and clinics there are communities that continue to live without access to even the most basic healthcare services. For many, a simple fever, an untreated wound, or a missed vaccination can become life threatening. It is in these forgotten spaces that our mission begins.

Our project is built on a simple yet powerful belief: healthcare is a right, not a privilege. We aim to bridge the healthcare gap through mobile health camps, bringing medical aid, awareness, and assurance directly to the doorsteps of the underserved.

Through our initiative, we organize mobile medical camps in marginalized and remote areas that lack access to proper healthcare infrastructure. These camps are staffed by dedicated healthcare professionals doctors, nurses, social workers, and volunteers who are committed to reaching those in need with compassion and expertise. For many, this mobile camp might be their first medical check up in years.

A Community Effort ;
This is not just a healthcare project it is a humanitarian movement. It takes collaboration, empathy, and the collective will to make a difference. We work hand in hand with local leaders, community volunteers, and partner organizations to ensure that no one is left behind.

Recent Outreach: Kollangunam Village
One of our most impactful recent initiatives was a medical camp held at Kollangunam village. This camp was organized in collaboration with dedicated partners including I Med Hospital, Equitas, and St. Paul Church, and coordinated by the passionate social workers of Prime Trust. The camp provided a wide range of services from health checkups and screenings to medication and health awareness benefiting local residents who often struggle to access timely healthcare. Smiles, relief, and gratitude filled the air as people received care, many of them for the very first time. This camp wasn’t just about treatment it was about restoring hope, trust, and dignity in healthcare.

Each camp is a reminder of how much work remains and how much can be achieved when compassion meets action. With every effort, we get closer to a world where healthcare truly reaches every life and every village.

Small Bookmarks, Big Imagination – World Reading Day at Prime Trust Tuition in Pondicherry

On June 19th, the children at Prime Trust’s tuition center in Pondicherry came together to celebrate World Reading Day – not with textbooks or lessons, but with scissors, paper, and a lot of creativity.

In a joyful afternoon session organized by Prime Trust and India Volunteer Care, the children had the chance to design and create their own bookmarks. The idea was simple: choose any shape, decorate it however you like, and take it home to use in your favorite book. There were no instructions, no fixed designs – just a table full of materials and a room full of imagination.

The activity was supported by Anna, a volunteer from Germany, who has been working with Prime Trust for the past few months. Together with the team, she encouraged the children to express themselves freely. Some cut out stars and animals, others decorated their bookmarks with hearts, names, and vibrant patterns. Stickers, glitter, colored pens – every creation was different, and every child had a story to tell.

More than just a fun art project, the session was a way to make reading feel personal and exciting. A handmade bookmark becomes something more than just a placeholder – it becomes a symbol of ownership, a small but powerful connection to the world of books.

At Prime Trust’s tuition center, activities like these are an important part of holistic education. They show that learning doesn’t have to be rigid or standardized – it can be colorful, creative, and deeply personal.

Because in the end, reading is not only about words. It’s about the joy of entering a new world – and sometimes, all you need is a small, handmade bookmark to help you find your way there.

Empowerment Through Skill: How Akshaya Self Help Groups Are Transforming Lives with Tailoring Classes

In the outskirts of Puducherry, a quiet but consistent transformation is underway. The Akshaya Self Help Groups Confederation, a local women-led network, is helping women gain financial independence and confidence—one stitch at a time. At the center of this effort are the free tailoring classes offered to women from underserved backgrounds.

These classes, hosted in village community halls or repurposed classrooms, offer more than just technical training. They are designed to provide women—many of whom have never had access to formal education or paid work—with practical skills they can immediately use to support themselves and their families.

Participants are taught the basics of sewing: cutting patterns, operating machines, hand-stitching, hemming, and producing simple garments like salwar kameez, blouses, or children’s clothing. Over the course of a few months, many women progress from complete beginners to skilled tailors capable of taking orders from neighbors or starting home-based micro-businesses.

The atmosphere in these sessions is focused but supportive. Women exchange advice, correct each other’s work, and talk openly about everyday challenges—from managing households to accessing healthcare. This social element is intentional: Akshaya views these sessions not only as skill-building platforms but also as safe, women-led spaces that foster trust and solidarity.

Upon completion of the program, participants receive a certificate and are encouraged to either seek clients independently or form small tailoring collectives with others in their group. In some cases, Akshaya facilitates links to microcredit schemes or helps former trainees purchase sewing machines through subsidy programs.

The long-term goal is not just to create income opportunities, but to build agency. Many graduates report improved confidence, increased respect within their families, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to household finances.

The Importance of Communication

What I Learned from Volunteering with Prime Trust by Amritha

When I first arrived in Pondicherry as part of my eleven-month voluntary service from Germany, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I had read about Prime Trust and its mission to support underprivileged women and children, but as with any international experience, the reality is always more nuanced than what you read online.

In the past nine months, I’ve grown into my role within the organization. My work began with tasks at the office: supporting social media, writing content, and assisting with fundraising. These weren’t the hands-on activities I initially imagined, but they turned out to be valuable in their own right. I learned how an NGO actually functions behind the scenes, and how crucial visibility and communication are to sustaining this kind of work.

Right from the beginning, I was able to build a steady and rewarding rhythm with the local children in the evening school program. Every day from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, children from the community come to the Prime Trust office to study. I support them with their homework and offer help especially in English. While the language barrier was challenging at first, it also pushed me to develop more intuitive ways of communication and connection.

I also had the chance to visit rural evening schools, where I saw a different side of the education landscape. The children there often spoke little English, but the enthusiasm to interact was always present. So instead of words, we exchanged dance moves.

One thing I appreciated was the flexibility that Prime Trust allowed us as volunteers. There was space to bring in our own ideas and initiative, but also support when things weren’t clear. At times, communication required persistence and patience — especially when roles weren’t immediately defined — but in the long run, that helped me become more independent and resourceful.

Volunteering isn’t about "saving the world." It’s about showing up, learning, sharing your time and skills, and being open to growth — both personal and mutual. I’m grateful for the people I met, the children I worked with, and the insight I gained into grassroots social work in India.

If you're considering volunteering abroad, come with realistic expectations and a willingness to adapt. And if you're working with Prime Trust, know that your contribution — however big or small — is part of something bigger.

India Volunteer Care: Supporting Change Through Responsible Volunteering

India Volunteer Care: Supporting Change Through Responsible Volunteering"

In the landscape of international volunteering, India Volunteer Care (IVC) stands out for its ethical approach, strong local partnerships, and long-term commitment to community development. Founded in 2010 by the team behind the NGO Prime Trust, IVC was created to support grassroots organizations across India—especially those that are often underfunded and overlooked.

A Platform Rooted in Local Needs
Unlike many international volunteer programs operated from abroad, IVC is fully managed by a local team in Puducherry. This ensures that the programs are deeply connected to real community needs and culturally grounded. The organization collaborates with a range of small, community-based NGOs in Tamil Nadu and beyond, facilitating meaningful placements where volunteers can truly contribute.

Diverse Volunteer Projects with Lasting Impact
India Volunteer Care offers a wide spectrum of volunteer opportunities across social, educational, environmental, and health-related fields. Some of the key areas include:
* Teaching and Education: Volunteers support schools and after-school programs, teaching English, math, or computer skills—particularly for children from low-income backgrounds and girls at risk of dropping out.
* Women’s Empowerment: Through partnerships with self-help groups and microfinance projects, volunteers help women gain financial independence and develop new skills. * Care and Support Programs: Opportunities are available in homes for orphaned girls, elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and women affected by violence or poverty. * Health Awareness and Community Outreach: Volunteers can participate in health education, HIV/AIDS awareness programs, and sanitation campaigns. * NGO Development Support: Those with skills in media, graphic design, IT, fundraising, or administration can assist local NGOs in building their capacity and expanding their reach. * Sustainable Farming and Environmental Work: In collaboration with organic farms, IVC also offers placements for those interested in sustainability and agriculture.

Internships and Research Projects
In addition to volunteer placements, India Volunteer Care facilitates customized internships for university students and researchers. These are tailored to specific academic fields and often include research support, mentorship, and opportunities to contribute to long-term development goals. Disciplines such as public health, sociology, education, gender studies, and environmental science are particularly well supported.

Ethical Volunteering: No Shortcuts
One of IVC’s defining principles is its emphasis on ethical and sustainable engagement. To ensure volunteers make a meaningful contribution, the organization requires a minimum stay of one month. This allows participants to integrate into their projects, build relationships, and avoid the superficial impact often associated with short-term voluntourism.
Furthermore, volunteer fees are kept low and are used directly to support project costs, accommodation, and the administrative needs of the local partner organizations. India Volunteer Care operates with full financial transparency—regular audits and reports are available to the public.

Living and Volunteering in Pondicherry
Volunteers are usually based in or around Puducherry, a coastal city in southern India known for its blend of French colonial architecture, Tamil culture, and vibrant community life.
Accommodation is simple but comfortable, typically in shared volunteer houses, and includes local meals. This immersive setup allows volunteers to experience Indian daily life in an authentic, respectful way.

India Volunteer Care offers a powerful alternative to conventional volunteer programs. With its locally-led structure, commitment to ethical standards, and wide network of grassroots partners, it provides opportunities for individuals to contribute to meaningful, community-driven development work in India.
For those looking to engage deeply and responsibly—whether as volunteers, interns, or supporters—India Volunteer Care represents a model of volunteering that prioritizes impact, respect, and sustainability over convenience.

Our volunteers went to the Varaguapattu school for a special activity.

Create your own island!
1 - Using rice to define the shape of your island
2 - Pencils and colors will be needed for the next step, so decide whether you want mountains, rivers, a school or an ice cream store on your island.
3 - Finally, after adding tea to hot water, come and paint your map to give your creation a veined look!
The result is a magnificent treasure map!
And what would you have added to your map?
Now it's your turn to reproduce these cards with your children and your communities!
