Prime Trust Founder Mr. S.M.Arasu visits the Kuravar community in Karikalampakkam village 26.08.2023 The Kuravars are one of the indigenous communities in Tamil Nadu, India. They have a long history and a rich cultural heritage, and are primarily found in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu. Traditionally, the Kuravars have been associated with hunting, gathering, and other forest-related occupations. They also have their own distinct set of customs, traditions, and rituals. Their songs, dances, and festivals often revolve around nature, given their traditional association with forests. They typically speak a variant of Tamil, though some groups might have their own dialects or use words that aren't common in standard Tamil. The Kuravars, like many other indigenous communities in India, have historically been marginalized and often face socio-economic challenges. They are often categorized under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in many parts of Tamil Nadu, which entitles them to certain reservations and benefits as per the Indian constitution. However, their actual status might vary based on region. Kuravar settlements, often called 'kuravar colonies' in local parlance, are typically located on the fringes of forests or in hilly terrains. However, with increasing urbanization and loss of forests, many have moved to urban areas seeking better livelihood opportunities. Current Challenges: The Kuravars, like many indigenous communities, face a range of challenges in modern-day India. These include loss of traditional livelihoods, land alienation, marginalization, lack of access to quality education and healthcare, and more. On 26.08.2023 the Prime trust Founder and Managing Director Mr.S.M. Arasu visited the kuravar community in Karikalampakkam village.
